MCALLEN, TEXAS – OCTOBER 19, 2021 – United Way of South Texas seeks volunteers for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Volunteers will serve as greeters, tax preparers and quality checkers at VITA sites throughout Hidalgo and Starr Counties during the 2021-2022 tax season. United Way’s VITA Program provides free tax preparation for families in Hidalgo and Starr Counties.

In 2021 over 52 high school students, college students, professionals and community members volunteered in United Way’s VITA Program and helped 2,402 families. The families saved approximately $600,500 in tax preparation fees and received $5.2 million in federal tax refunds.

This year, individuals or families who earn $60,000 or less may be eligible to benefit from the service at no cost. 2021-2022 VITA Sponsoring Companies include: United Way of South Texas, Wells Fargo, Magic Valley Electric Cooperative, H-E-B, Frost Bank, Internal Revenue Service, Texas Regional Bank, PNC Bank, IBC Bank and Security Service Federal Credit Union. Thanks to our sponsors, United Way will reach over 178,500 working families with information about tax benefits, refunds and free tax services at fifteen locations. Join the team doing meaningful work for our community! All VITA sites will follow Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local COVID-19 safety guidelines to keep clients, volunteers and staff safe.

United Way of South Texas invests in programs that address critical services in the areas of Health, Education, Financial Stability and Safety Net. We support over 21 non-profit agencies in our community that serve a minimum of 178,500 local residents. Services provided by United Way of South Texas through our partner agencies include emergency shelter, family violence counseling, character building programs, child victim advocacy and infant stimulation classes. If you would like to support United Way programs with a monetary donation, you may mail a tax deductible check to United Way of South Texas at P.O Box 187, McAllen, TX 78505-0187.
