MCALLEN, TEXAS – MAY 27, 2021 –  United Way of South Texas received a Winter Storm Grant of $25,000 from AEP Texas Foundation to assist families who were affected by the winter storm in Hidalgo and Starr Counties.

In February, the winter storm left many families without electricity, work and lack of supplies to recover. Through the support of AEP Texas Foundation, United Way has provided assistance to families for rent, utilities, food and minor home repair materials. Over 350 individuals have been served, to date, from funds awarded to Mercedes I.S.D., Rio Grande City C.I.S.D. and Weslaco I.S.D.

“The AEP Foundation grant is part of our continued support of the communities we serve,” Lee Jones, Community Affairs and Customer Service Manager said. “We know the winter storm had an impact on our communities and stretched the resources of the agencies that respond to these types of emergencies.” AEP Texas is a long-time partner of United Way; employees volunteer in many programs, including the Back to School Shopping Spree, Day of Caring and Fund Distribution reviews.

The United Way Board of Directors thanks AEP Texas Foundation for their support to meet critical needs in our community. The Board will award funds based on meeting eligibility requirements and funding availability.
