The United Way of South Texas Board of Directors thanks the City of McAllen employees for their generosity, time and commitment to the community. The City of McAllen is one of United Way’s Top 10 Company Supporters. City of McAllen employees contributed over $46,000 to United Way of South Texas during the 2021 Campaign. Elvira Alonzo, Public Works Director, is serving her second volunteer term as Campaign Co-Chair in Hidalgo and Starr Counties.
Javier Zamora and Linda Gonzalez are City of McAllen Loaned Executives and are responsible for coordinating the City’s 2022 Employee Campaign. They, along with the support of City Management and Directors, will educate co-workers about many of the critical services that are provided by United Way programs and partner agencies. Some of the diverse services include: shelters for victims of domestic violence and the homeless, youth mentorship programs, addiction counseling, utility and rent assistance, after school youth programs and homework assistance, end of life care services and much more.
In 2021, United Way Agencies and Programs provided 25,772 units of direct service to McAllen residents. Partner agencies, including the American Red Cross, Girl Scouts of Greater South Texas, Children’s Advocacy Center, CASA, The Salvation Army, United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), Day of Caring, and the Back to School “In Style” Shopping Spree, impacted over 188,000 residents throughout Hidalgo and Starr Counties.
