United Way of South Texas Hosts AmeriCorps NCCC Members

February 20, 2024

United Way of South Texas proudly welcomes the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) Members. They will assist with United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program and also complete projects at Women Together, The Salvation Army and Comfort House.

AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time, residential program with approximately 1,200 young adults who serve communities nationwide on an annual basis. During their three-month term with United Way, nine Corps Members – all 18 to 26 years old – will attend VITA trainings to become IRS Certified Advanced Tax Preparers who will assist during the 2024 tax season. The AmeriCorps NCCC division offers each Corps Member $7,395 to help pay for college, or to pay back existing student loans. Other benefits include a small living stipend, room and board, travel and leadership development. AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism, brings people together to tackle projects in a variety of service areas. AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers serve with organizations dedicated to the improvement of communities. AmeriCorps helps make service to others a cornerstone of our national culture.

“The Board, staff and I are extremely grateful to have been invited to host national AmeriCorps NCCC members,” said UW Board Member Blanca I. Villalobos, IBC Bank. “The process to host them began in July, 2023, with a search for affordable housing for a three-month period and a lengthy application and interview process with staff. It was worth it, because we know that we will be able to help at least an additional seven hundred families in Hidalgo and Starr Counties. We thank everyone who took time to visit with our President, Lilly Lopez-Killelea and I, to explore options for the AmeriCorps team,” Villalobos added. The 2024 AmeriCorps NCCC Members are from Connecticut; Florida; Massachusetts; New York; North Carolina; Washington State; and Wisconsin.
