United Way of South Texas honors The Monitor on the 20th Anniversary of The Spirit of Christmas Project

May 12, 2025

The United Way Board of Directors recognized AIM Media TX – The Monitor for their twenty-year partnership in support of the Spirit of Christmas program (formerly 12 Days of Christmas).

The Spirit of Christmas project is a community initiative that was launched to assist vulnerable families in dire need of community support, due to tragic circumstances that affected their ability to provide basic human needs necessary to gain self-sufficiency. Private individuals and local businesses responded by making donations (100% designations) of a wide variety, including: financial support; job training and employment; permanent housing; vehicles; crucial home repairs; home appliances; and much more. Reporters at The Monitor, led by Mr. Michael Rodriguez, dedicate time during the holidays to visit with the families to learn about the circumstances, that led them to distressed conditions.

United Way of South Texas works with nonprofits, governmental agencies, and school districts to nominate the families that are featured in The Monitor. Their condition ranges from terminal illnesses, loss of a home or employment, and family violence, to other extenuating challenges.

For twenty years, the Spirit of Christmas project has served as a beacon of hope and generosity, offering priceless support to 227 families in need. Numerous companies also joined the cause, adopting an additional 168 families. United Way estimates that approximately 1,782 individuals have benefited from this initiative. This incredible outpouring of support has resulted in monetary contributions of $678,495, showcasing the spirit of compassion and solidarity that defines this cherished project.

The Board of Directors express their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated reporters and employees of The Monitor, for their exceptional contributions and collaboration to the Spirit of Christmas Project. Their unwavering commitment and teamwork have made this initiative a success and brought joy and support to those in need during the holiday season.
