Spirit of Christmas Program
The Spirit of Christmas Program is a collaboration between United Way of South Texas and The Monitor. We work with nonprofits, governmental agencies, and school districts to nominate families going through difficult times during the holidays. The families that were selected to participate in the program have experienced illness, loss of a home, a death in the family, and could use the community’s help to meet their needs.
A committee of community leaders selected the families to be interviewed and featured by The Monitor to indicate their needs and requested donations. The stories run 12 days prior to Christmas, and the community provides donations for the families and deliver them to the United Way office. The United Way of South Texas staff and volunteers coordinate and deliver all gifts to families. All monetary donations are given to the families as designated by the contributors. If contributions are not designated to a specific family, those monies are distributed proportionately amongst the families.
United Way of South Texas does not keep any of the in-kind or monetary donations.
