Support United Way Communities in the Aftermath of Hurricane Harvey

McAllen, TX – August 28, 2017 – If you would like to support the massive disaster relief underway in Houston, The United Way of South Texas encourages you to direct your support through the Houston United Way Relief Fund at www.unitedwayhouston.org/flood/flood-donation. This United Way has reported that the devastation will be great and the community will need incredible resources to recover.

In addition to Houston, many other Texas communities have been deeply affected by Hurricane Harvey and United Ways in these communities are on the ground coordinating relief and recovery efforts. For a community listing and donation information to support these United Ways, please visit the United Ways of Texas website at https://www.uwtexas.org/hurricane-harvey. Our state association, along with United Ways across the state, will be playing a major role in coordinating relief and recovery and are well positioned to direct resources and support to where it is most needed.

United Way’s first priority will be safety, shelter and basic needs, like food. Once the communities begin to stabilize, they will focus on long-term recovery efforts. Right now, the greatest need is financial support.

“Our thoughts are with the victims of the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey,” said Thelma Garza, President of United Way of South Texas. “United Ways are always a powerful force in the community, in particular in times of disaster like Houston and the surrounding communities are experiencing right now.  The United Way community in our state are on-the-ground and actively raising funds to support the agencies and services meeting the most pressing needs.”

Houston United Way has communicated that disaster volunteers are needed through the following organizations:

American Red Cross is seeking volunteers. Volunteer positions include warehousing, shelter management, supply distribution and administrative support. Those interested in volunteering can register at redcross.org/volunteer.

Volunteer Houston is connecting individuals with disaster volunteer opportunities. To learn more, visit www.volunteerhouston.org.
